Book Review | Siren Sisters by Dana Langer

Siren Sisters is a debut middle grade fantasy from Dana Langer.

A soon-to-be siren finds herself responsible for the lives of her sisters—and the fisherman they curse—in this haunting debut novel that Kirkus calls "an exciting fantasy with a heart-stopping ending by an author to watch."

Lolly Salt has three beautiful sisters. When they’re not in school or running their small town’s diner, they’re secretly luring ships to their doom from the cliffs of Starbridge Cove, Maine. With alluring voices that twelve-year-old Lolly has yet to grow into (not that she wants to anyway) the Salt sisters do the work mandated by the Sea Witch, a glamorously frightening figure determined to keep the girls under her control. With their mother dead after a terrible car crash, and their father drowning in grief, the sisters carry on with their lives and duties…until a local sea captain gets suspicious about the shipwrecks.

On the day before her birthday, Lolly watches in helpless horror as her sisters are lured themselves by curse-reversing fishermen—and suddenly it’s up to her and her best friend Jason to rescue the sirens of Starbridge Cove.

Why did I read Siren Sisters?

How could I resist a beautiful cover depicting middle grade girls luring fishermen to their deaths?!

The Strengths

This was a great read. Lolly wants to be normal (like any 12 year old wants to be), but she's turning into a siren. I remember what it was like to be 12. Siren Sisters resonated with me despite how far I am from being a siren (or a 12 year old).

It's wonderful to read about strong, loving, capable, supportive sisters. These are characters you want to spend time with.

The Weaknesses

Some of the things I really enjoyed in the beginning never reconnected or played out in the rest of the story. I really thought the parents and their singing careers (hello, siren daughters) and their odd behavior would tie in more than just explaining the obligatory dead/absentee parents. It felt like there was a lot of foreshadowing to things that never came to pass, too.

Would I recommend Siren Sisters to others?

Yes. If you are a fan of middle grade fantasy and this sounds like something you might enjoy, definitely give it a read.

Book Review | Little Heaven by Nick Cutter

Little Heaven is a new horror book from Nick Cutter.

An all-new epic tale of terror and redemption set in the hinterlands of midcentury New Mexico from the acclaimed author of The Troop—which Stephen King raved “scared the hell out of me and I couldn’t put it down...old-school horror at its best.”

From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King’s It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous. Stirrings in the woods and over the treetops—the brooding shape of a monolith known as the Black Rock casts its terrible pall. Paranoia and distrust grips the settlement. The escape routes are gradually cut off as events spiral towards madness. Hell—or the closest thing to it—invades Little Heaven. The remaining occupants are forced to take a stand and fight back, but whatever has cast its dark eye on Little Heaven is now marshaling its powers...and it wants them all.

Why did I read Little Heaven?

I'm a fan of Nick Cutter. I enjoyed both The Troop and The Deep so I look forward to reading his new releases.

The Strengths

There were some disturbing moments early on that I appreciated. (Unfortunately, Little Heaven was so consistently disturbing that it suffered from the law of diminishing returns.)

The Weaknesses

There was so much happening at all times and yet I was so bored. I couldn't connect to any of it so I didn't really care what happened to anyone.

This turned out to be a miserable read for me.

Would I recommend Little Heaven to others?

No, I wouldn't. There are great reviews out there you can seek out if you want a different perspective, but this isn't a book I will be passing along to others.

Recent Updates and Goals for 2017

I'm hoping you guys aren't having severe weather. I know if it's below freezing here, it must be really bad elsewhere.

Did you have a great start to the new year? My reading week was a mixed bag. I was disappointed by Little Heaven, but I really enjoyed Siren Sisters.

Posted Last Week

On January 1, I posted about my first book of 2017.

Check out all of the Upcoming January 2017 Book Releases in Fantasy, Horror, and Science Fiction I'd love to read this month.

I also posted my review for The Fireman by Joe Hill.

Books Read Last Week

Siren Sisters by Dana Langer

Review Copies

Frostblood (Frostblood Saga #1) by Elly Blake - I forgot to mention this one last week! I will probably start this one over the weekend.

Paranormal Canadian Tales: A Supernatural Journey by Dawn Hunter Clark - Schiffer Publishing sent me this book, and I'm super excited about it. It's been a while since I've read some real accounts of paranormal activities. This might be a good one to start while I'm trapped inside from the cold.

Goals for 2017

Goodreads Challenge - As always, my Goodreads challenge will be set at 50. I'm hoping to read more than that this year, but I've always aimed for at least 50 books (even before I started blogging). It's a personal number, and I don't foresee ever changing it.

Horror - This is a goal I will probably fail. I'd like to read at least 4 horror books a month. If you do the math, this makes 48 books when my overall goal is only 50. I do not plan to only read horror this year. This is an attempt to up my horror game. I started my horror spotlight posts last year in an effort to seek out more horror. I'm happy with the progress I'm making, and I think this will help keep me on track.

Nonfiction - I love nonfiction. The last couple of years I have really gotten away from reading it. I made a goal last year to return to reading nonfiction, and I failed miserably. I'm going to try this goal without setting a hard number this year and see how it goes.

Pre-2017 TBR - This is another category I'm going to shoot for without a hard number. This can definitely overlap with my horror goal. This goal only includes books I already own and not the back titles I buy in 2017. This can include rereads from my shelves.

Review Catchup - I need to catch up on some reviews. Reviews that never got posted, reviews that never got written, books that never got read in the first place. Blogging breaks are my downfall (summer!!), and I'd love to revisit or revive some titles I never really got to talk about on the blog.

Blogging - As far as blogging goes, I will probably remain as inconsistent as ever. I'd like to take less breaks this year, but I'm determined that my blog will stay stress free. I already have enough stress and commitments with a full time job and motherhood. Blogging is a lot of work! It's rewarding, but it also needs to remain fun. As long as it feels more like a hobby and less like a job, I'm good to go. One thing I would like to do is keep better stats this year. I don't have any particular goals I'm aiming for, but I would like to be able to compare what I'm reading each year.

What are you reading this week? Be sure to let me know in the comments or leave me a link!

Book Review | The Fireman by Joe Hill

The Fireman was released in paperback today so I decided this would be the perfect time to do some catch up and finally post a review for it.

The Fireman is a horror novel from Joe Hill.

From the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of NOS4A2 and Heart-Shaped Box comes a chilling novel about a worldwide pandemic of spontaneous combustion that threatens to reduce civilization to ashes and a band of improbable heroes who battle to save it, led by one powerful and enigmatic man known as the Fireman.

The fireman is coming. Stay cool.

No one knows exactly when it began or where it originated. A terrifying new plague is spreading like wildfire across the country, striking cities one by one: Boston, Detroit, Seattle. The doctors call it Draco Incendia Trychophyton. To everyone else it’s Dragonscale, a highly contagious, deadly spore that marks its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies—before causing them to burst into flames. Millions are infected; blazes erupt everywhere. There is no antidote. No one is safe.

Harper Grayson, a compassionate, dedicated nurse as pragmatic as Mary Poppins, treated hundreds of infected patients before her hospital burned to the ground. Now she’s discovered the telltale gold-flecked marks on her skin. When the outbreak first began, she and her husband, Jakob, had made a pact: they would take matters into their own hands if they became infected. To Jakob’s dismay, Harper wants to live—at least until the fetus she is carrying comes to term. At the hospital, she witnessed infected mothers give birth to healthy babies and believes hers will be fine too. . . if she can live long enough to deliver the child.

Convinced that his do-gooding wife has made him sick, Jakob becomes unhinged, and eventually abandons her as their placid New England community collapses in terror. The chaos gives rise to ruthless Cremation Squads—armed, self-appointed posses roaming the streets and woods to exterminate those who they believe carry the spore. But Harper isn’t as alone as she fears: a mysterious and compelling stranger she briefly met at the hospital, a man in a dirty yellow fire fighter’s jacket, carrying a hooked iron bar, straddles the abyss between insanity and death. Known as The Fireman, he strolls the ruins of New Hampshire, a madman afflicted with Dragonscale who has learned to control the fire within himself, using it as a shield to protect the hunted . . . and as a weapon to avenge the wronged.

In the desperate season to come, as the world burns out of control, Harper must learn the Fireman’s secrets before her life—and that of her unborn child—goes up in smoke.

Why did I read The Fireman?

Joe Hill. After NOS4A2, I'm a fan for life.

The Strengths

Joe Hill. Joe Hill inherited some hella good genes. There is a lot of Stephen King in Joe Hill and that's a great thing.

The Fireman is original and a lot of it has stuck with me even though it's been months since I read it.

Dragonscale - the virus - is more than just a cool premise. I thought "OK, this is one of those times I'm just going to have to go along with the imagination of the King family", but it went and got all science-y on me which made me love it even more.

The Weaknesses

You won't hear me say this very often, but The Fireman was too long. I love me a chunky read, and I really love a chunky read from Joe Hill, but I felt like The Fireman was chunky for chunky's sake. It didn't need to be that long and that ultimately hindered my enjoyment of the book.

Would I recommend The Fireman to others?

Yes! The Fireman was one of my favorite reads last year.

A magical debut novel for readers of Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, and Neil Gaiman’s myth-rich fantasies, The Bear and the Nightingale spins an irresistible spell as it announces the arrival of a singular talent with a gorgeous voice.

At the edge of the Russian wilderness, winter lasts most of the year and the snowdrifts grow taller than houses. But Vasilisa doesn’t mind—she spends the winter nights huddled around the embers of a fire with her beloved siblings, listening to her nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, she loves the chilling story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon, who appears in the frigid night to claim unwary souls. Wise Russians fear him, her nurse says, and honor the spirits of house and yard and forest that protect their homes from evil.

After Vasilisa’s mother dies, her father goes to Moscow and brings home a new wife. Fiercely devout, city-bred, Vasilisa’s new stepmother forbids her family from honoring the household spirits. The family acquiesces, but Vasilisa is frightened, sensing that more hinges upon their rituals than anyone knows.

And indeed, crops begin to fail, evil creatures of the forest creep nearer, and misfortune stalks the village. All the while, Vasilisa’s stepmother grows ever harsher in her determination to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for either marriage or confinement in a convent.

As danger circles, Vasilisa must defy even the people she loves and call on dangerous gifts she has long concealed—this, in order to protect her family from a threat that seems to have stepped from her nurse’s most frightening tales.

The Wolf of Allendale by Hannah SpencerThe Wolf of Allendale by Hannah Spencer
Expected publication: January 17th 2017 by HarperLegend

The fates of two wise men from the same village living in different time periods are connected by one mythical creature—and forces they cannot control—in this compelling supernatural tale that imaginatively retells the historical legend of the Wolf of Allendale.

In a Druid village in Northumberland, England, Bran, the village leader, must face two dangerous opponents: an otherworldly animal and formidable invaders from the south.

Two thousand years later, at the dawn of the Industrial Age, this sleepy English village once again faces the frightening menace. Something is killing the sheep—and leaving large, mysterious footprints across the countryside.

Bert, an old shepherd, is the only villager who understands what is happening. The beast that once terrorized this land, a mythical wolf known as a cysgod-cerddwr—shadow walker—has been disturbed for the first time since the Iron Age, and only one weapon can stop it: an ancient ritual that has nearly been lost to time.

Separated by eons, Bran and Bert must battle this fearsome wolf using the sacred practice that has been passed down from generation to generation. Both must confront the threat of the mysterious beast and the end of their way of life. Bran’s culture is imperiled by Roman conquest. Bert’s shepherd life is threatened by the railways and mines that encroach upon his small town.

In this thought-provoking paranormal novel, Hannah Spencer uses the story of the Wolf of Allendale as a creative lens to examine the clash of progress and tradition as she brings to light ancient folklore that is nearly forgotten.

A space adventure set on a lone ship where the murdered crew are resurrected through cloning to discover who their killer was -- and the secret to their mission.

It was not common to awaken in a cloning vat streaked with drying blood.

At least, Marie Shea iv had never experienced it. She had no memory of how she died. That was also new; before, when she had awakened as a new clone, her first memory was of how she died, from illness once and from injury once...

Maria's vat was in the front of six vats, each one holding the clone of a crew member of the starship Pituitary, each clone waiting for its previous incarnation to die so it could awaken. Apparently Maria wasn't the only one to die recently.
